Nameplate VANGUARD -
WARSHIP CLASS", ex British Railways Type 4 B-B Diesel Hydraulic
"Warship" Class Locomotive number D801 built Swindon
Works in 1958, one of 38 diesel hydraulics built there for the
Western Region. Introduced new to Laira in November 1958, where
it spent all its working life until withdrawal from there in
August 1968 and subsequent cutting up at Swindon
in October 1970. Cast aluminium measuring 39½" x 11¼",
face painted red, plenty of maroon remnants around the edges
and the back is typical with paint traces, pitting and corrosion.
A wonderful example and the first to be named after an actual
warship, D800 of course was Sir Brian Robinson. Note: The Royal
Navy had 10 vessels named Vanguard. The first ship was a 32
gun Galleon launched in 1586. The 9th and last ship was the
1956 'flagship' Battleship which was actually used in the filming
of 'Sink The Bismark'. The 10th isn't a ship but a 'boat', i.e.
the current nuclear submarine still in service.

Nidd Valley Light Railway whole Edmondson Ticket from
Pateley Bridge to Ramsgill. Date stamped
on the rear '07 SEP 12' the ticket is indeed numbered 001 so
was absolutely the first ticket ever issued for this journey.
Discovered loose in an old Stanley Gibbons Album of Arms, Crests
& Monograms, it was fortunate the vendor found it for it
had, at one time been pasted in the inside cover and somehow
became detached. This is known because there is a hand written
inscription on the inside cover that reads:- 'This ticket was
the first to be paid for on the opening of the N.V. Light Railway
Sep 12th 1907'. The railway was operated by Bradford Corporation
and was closed on 31st December 1929 to passengers but was still
used for another six years for goods. An amazing survivor from
this short-lived little railway. The ticket has been re-attached
to the first page of the album in a clear sleeve to show where
it was kept over the years. The album accompanies of course.

WARSHIP CLASS, ex British Railways Type 4 A1A-A1A Diesel Hydraulic
"Warship" Class Locomotive number D604, built by the
North British Locomotive Company Glasgow
under works number 27664. Last of only five built for the Western
Region and designated Class 41 to work crack expresses to and
from the West. Delivered in January 1959 to Laira, it spent
most of its working life there, primarily on passenger workings
but later on China Clay trains. A class 37 shortage at Landore
saw a brief spell there near withdrawal, that being in December
1967 from Laira. Although the last one built, it was the first
to be cut up at Cashmores, Newport
in September 1968. Cast aluminium measuring 33¾" x 11¼"
with the front repainted red, rear having plenty of original
green paint interspersed with pitting and general corrosion.
A scarce opportunity to own one of only ten nameplates from
this class, indeed, two already reside at York
Railway Museum.
Note: The Royal Navy had 6 vessels named Cossack, the first
being a 22 gun Frigate launched in 1806. The last was a class
C Destroyer launched in 1945.
